Patchouli is one of the materials I love most. After oud and deer musk, it undoubtedly holds a place among my favourite perfumery materials. I have always enjoyed exploring patchouli from different origins, experiencing its various oils, and discovering the many different faces it can reveal.

The story of Patchouli Royal began when I received a selection of patchouli samples. Among them was an exceptionally dark Patchouli Absolute, aged for many years and possessing a depth and character that were difficult to forget. I continued thinking about the best way to use it and how it might become the heart of an entire perfume rather than merely one element within another composition.

Sometime later, while the idea was still in my mind and I had begun working on Jasmin Royal, I received another completely different sample: an aged Patchouli Essential Oil, intensely aromatic and distinctive from the very first moment. As soon as I experienced it, I imagined how it might meet the first Patchouli Absolute and how each could reveal a different facet of the other.

From there, the image of the perfume began to take shape. To reach the patchouli aroma I had envisioned, I felt the composition needed a third variety—one that could complete the space between the depth of the dark absolute and the aromatic character of the aged essential oil.

And so, Patchouli Royal became the second chapter of the Royal Collection, following Jasmin Royal: a perfume constructed around three entirely different patchouli oils, each contributing its own dimension to the scent.

Patchouli Royal is dark.

The first impression is an extraordinarily deep aged patchouli, rich with earth, dark woods, and that beautiful bitter-green character that makes exceptional patchouli so captivating. It carries an almost damp forest-floor quality, but with considerably greater refinement and depth.

The patchouli meets wild Malaysian and Thai ouds, forming a magnificent dark-wood accord. The ouds bring an exotic and distinctive character to the patchouli, pushing it away from the familiar earthy profile and into something far more unusual.

Then comes the unexpected part.

A rich dark chocolate and roasted coffee character develops through the heart, giving the patchouli an almost bitter cacao-like quality. It is dark, dry, and slightly intoxicating rather than sweet.

Beneath this rests Nepalese spikenard, adding a deep aromatic rootiness, while orris and violet soften the composition and give its darkness a smoother, more elegant character.

The final drydown is pure dark woods, aged patchouli, cacao, and coffee, with a soft, powdery violet trail lingering underneath.

There is not one or two, but three entirely different types of patchouli oil in this perfume, each bringing a different dimension to its aromatic character.

Patchouli Royal is made for anyone who desires patchouli at its darkest, earthiest, most aged, and most luxurious—with wild oud taking it somewhere far beyond conventional patchouli fragrances.
