The Fragrance Experience

The story of Liwan Al Sultan began when I experienced one of Sultan Qaboos’s private aromatic blends: an extraordinary composition aged for decades, bringing together oud, florals, amber, and Omani Hojari frankincense in a scent that remained in my mind long after that first encounter.

It was among the most beautiful of the Sultan’s blends that I had ever experienced. Its strength, richness, and the way its materials had become intertwined left me wondering how a single blend could achieve such beauty. It was difficult to separate my admiration for any individual material from my admiration for the composition as a whole; each one gave greater depth and allure to everything around it.

That encounter inspired Liwan Al Sultan: to build a perfume around this aged blend, preserving its character while giving its beauty more space to unfold. Only a very small quantity was available, enough to create just thirty-two bottles.

The fragrance takes its name from the liwan, evoking the Sultan’s reception hall, where dignitaries and honoured guests are welcomed amid precious woods and Omani Hojari frankincense, in an atmosphere of quiet grandeur.

What strikes me most about Liwan Al Sultan is its ability to transport you there. You can almost imagine yourself seated in the majlis, with the aroma of Hojari frankincense rising around you, threaded with cardamom and the warmth of cinnamon bark. With each breath, the scene takes shape and another layer of the fragrance reveals itself, drawing you further into the atmosphere of the room.

The opening brings the green aromatic freshness of cardamom and the dry warmth of cinnamon, illuminated by the resinous, gently citrus-toned character of Omani Hojari frankincense. A delicate touch of ambergris adds soft mineral radiance, lending space and diffusion to the opening as the aged blend begins to reveal its depth.
